ENFORCEMENT OF DISABLED PARKING BYLAW CONTINUES
WHITEHORSE - In the first month of enforcement, the City's Bylaw Department handed out 30 tickets related to the new disabled parking bylaw provisions, Mayor Bev Buckway said.
"After a period of public education the City's Bylaw Department stepped up enforcement as announced and handed out $7500 worth of fines in September to motorists who were illegally parked in disabled parking spaces," said Buckway. "I implore all motorists to respect the bylaw and leave disabled parking spaces for those who need them."
Following a change to the territorial government's Motor Vehicles Act the City changed its own parking bylaw to allow for the enforcement of disabled parking spaces on private property and raised the associated fine to $250.
The City undertook a public education campaign in the month of August and began issuing tickets to offenders parked illegally in disabled parking spaces on September 1st.
"The majority of these tickets were issued on private property with only a minimum of offences occurring in the downtown core," said Bylaw Services Manager Dave Pruden. "The City will continue its efforts and will expand our enforcement to include evenings and weekends."
