Teslin
Teslin, Yukon is a small village 110 miles southeast from Whitehorse, located at Mile 804 (Km. 1244) on the Alaska Highway. It's bordered by the waters of Nisutlin Bay and Teslin Lake.
During the Gold Rush of 1898, Teslin was a booming campsite, providing a stopover on the Canadian route to the Klondike. Permanent residents settled, and The Hudson Bay Co. established a trading post for the villagers and those traveling the Klondike trail.
After the rush subsided, The Hudson Bay Co. post closed in 1903, and the Nisutlin Trading Post was opened. With the arrival of the Northwest Mounted Police, and the Anglican Church opening a mission in 1906, the community continued to grow. The early log building of the first mission is still used today as a parish hall.
Home to about 450 people, Teslin is a bustling northern community with amenities such as a museum, RCMP Detachment, school, community centre, health unit, post office, motels, restaurants, and a general store.
The fishing is good in Teslin. Home to Lake Trout, and spawning Chinook and Chum salmon in the later summer, Teslin Lake is 78 miles (125 km) long, and 2 miles (3+ km) wide. Hunting season in autumn provides an array of ducks, geese and moose. Nisutlin Bridge, the longest bridge on the Alaska Highway, provides a public boat ramp and launch.
