Watson Lake
Known as the Yukon's Gateway, Watson Lake is a vibrant, multicultural community of approximately 1,500 residents. Situated on the world famous Alaska Highway at 1016.8 km (635 mile), it also serves as an ideal service centre for travelers on the move, or for spending a day or two exploring the many activities and surrounding pristine wilderness.
As the traditional territory of the Kaska-Dene People, former trading posts in the region date back to the early 19th century, but the Cassiar Gold Rush in 1887 saw a new trading post and store, which established Watson Lake.
When the military airport began construction in the region in 1941, the small community of Watson Lake evolved into an accommodations and supply centre for this development. Today, the town is the key transportation, communication and distribution centre for mining and logging activities in southern Yukon, northern B.C., and some of the North West Territories.
Take advantage of the abundant camping opportunities, and be sure to check out the Northern Lights Centre. Visit the Watson Lake Visitor Information Centre to learn more.
